Small businesses are the engine of our national economy, comprising over 99% of all businesses in the United States. Beyond their economic impact, they play a critical role in our national security and directly support the warfighter. Small businesses bring unparalleled agility, disruptive innovation, and specialized capabilities to our defense industrial base, ensuring our service members are equipped with the most advanced tools and technologies to execute their missions effectively.

Today, the President hosted a summit honoring the contributions of small businesses across the nation. As President Trump said it clearly: small businesses are “the lifeblood of the American economy…[and] our country is made up of a lot of small businesses and that ends up being a really big business.”

President Trump, through his “Great Big Beautiful Tax Cut and Regulation Cut Bill” (as he remarked today), has unlocked incredible capital flow for America’s small businesses. In fact, 12 million small businesses got an average tax cut of over $7,000. 

The Department of War is committed to leveraging small business ingenuity. As of the end of April, the Department has funded $131 billion in small business spending since January 2025. This significant investment underscores our reliance on and trust in the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our industrial base forward and represents, in many cases, the next generation of defense primes.

To celebrate Small Business Week and Small Business Month throughout May, the Office of Industrial Base Growth will be hosting a series of events and promotions across social media, in the Pentagon, and with our Small Business Administration leaders and colleagues. We invite you to participate in these upcoming events and take the time to recognize the vital warfighting contributions of our small business partners.
